Knowing where we don’t want to be helps us define where we do want to be. Finding hope and recognizing the good that’s already happening is fuel to our inspiration. Below are some solutions and actions that prove that nothing is really impossible and are making bounds of difference and causing change around the world!

What do we know?

  • We have over 9 Billion Tons of plastic on the planet.
  • We’ve discarded over 60% of plastic produced to date (since the 50s).
  • Since 2012 – over 1100 commitments have been made worldwide to reduce plastic waste and pollution.
  • Only 9% of all plastics have been recycled to date.
  • The amount of plastics entering the Ocean every year is between 8 and 12 Million metric tons.
  • In the US the plastic recycling rate is at about 30%.
  • Worldwide production of virgin plastic is increasing due to increased demand caused by an increase in use, population, as well as disposable income.
  • There is an increase in subsidies for processing crude oil topping at $161 Billion in 2017, while the total investments committed towards a circular economy is $12 Billion.
  • China is no longer taking the west’s “recycling” – they took almost 50% of all recyclables since the late 80s!
  • Plastic is a valuable resource – we extract it from the ground, put effort and energy into obtaining it, design, process and manufacture a “product”, then pay for it, and then all of a sudden it becomes “waste”.
  • ALL plastic is recyclable, technically.
  • We are losing Billions of dollars to the ocean every year – a double or triple hit on us – loss of value, health of our ocean, drinking water and planet, and the impact on our own well-being.

We are losing Billions of dollars to the ocean every year – a double or triple hit on us – loss of value, health of our ocean, drinking water and planet, and the impact on our own well-being. And when we turn the weight into dollars it makes more sense for us to question the status quo.

it’s not all bad news we ARE starting to change and the world is seeing differences. As long as we come together
